How long does it take to get a Maine medical license?

You can apply for your license to the Maine Board of Licensure in Medicine either submitting your document via FCVS or send them by mail. If you already have an account with the FCVS, the licensure process will take 12 to 14 weeks. If you need to collect the required documents and send them by mail, it may take 16 to 20 weeks.

How do I get a medical license in Maine?

To get a medical license you should apply to the Maine Board of Licensure in Medicine.

  • Firstly, graduate from a medical school that is accredited by the Board
  • Secondly, complete a postgraduate training that is accredited by the American Board of Medical Specialties

After that get a passing score in one of the following exams:

  • Each test of United States Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE), Federation Licensing Exam (FLEX), or National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME) separately or in an approved combination. You have three attempts for each test. And all exams must be completed within 7 years
  • State Board exam
  • The Board also accepts Licentiate of the Medical Council of Canada (LMCC) and British Isles Credentialing – General Medical Council of United Kingdom, or the Republic of Ireland, or Scotland

Moreover, you will need to pass a State of Maine jurisprudence exam administered by the Board.

How to apply

After completing all the requirements you can apply for your license either through FCVS or send your application and documents to the Board by mail.

You need to submit:

  1. Your personal information
  2. Official transcripts
  3. Certificates from training
  4. Proof of postgraduate practice
  5. Results of the exams
  6. Criminal background check results
  7. And, payment checks
